Collaborative Trials

2020-2022: Interlab study on Non-target and suspect screening methods for organic substances in indoor dust (ILS-NTS_Dust2) (Umea University and NILU).

2019-2021: Interlab study on NTS of CECs in biota after a Workshop on NTS in biota (Uppsala 2018) using environmental specimen banks archived samples.

2019-2021: Interlab study on Passive sampling & evaluation of algorithms for deconvolution and library-searching, the data are published in Scientific Data.

2015-2016: Collaborative Trial on non-target screening techniques on dust samples: This CT was organised in collaboration with the WG Indoor environment. The results are published in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry.

2013: Collaborative Trial on non-target screening techniques applied to a river water sample: This was the first time worldwidesuch an exercise had been conducted in the area of environmental analysis. The results are published in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry.

Retrospective screening tools

NormaNEWS2 (Second round of the NORMAN network Early Warning System initiative) was launched in 2019. The participants selected a NormaNEWS2 list of suspects (> 300 compounds) which has been added to the Suspect List Exchange page (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3634963) and is now part of SusDat and EPA CompTox Dashboard. All results were submitted and the results are currently evaluated.

NORMAN Suspect List Exchange initiative and SusDat database: The aim of this initiative is to share information on substances and associated metadata from different platforms, as a common effort of European and North American researchers to support contaminant identification, prioritisation and retrospective screening efforts. All suspect lists are integrated into the US EPA CompTox Chemistry Dashboard. All suspect lists can be found on Zenodo. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.4249026.

NormaNEWS (The Norman Early Warning System): was launched in 2015 to test the potential of an “Early warning network” to rapidly assess the spatial and temporal distribution of contaminants of emerging concern in environmental samples through retrospective analysis of HRMS data. The results of the first round of NormaNEWS are published in Environ. Sci. & Technology

NORMAN RTI (Retention Time Index): was developed as a harmonised model for the prediction of the retention time index (RTI) for more robust retrospective analysis of a large number of contaminants of emerging concern. Publication in prep.

NORMAN MassBank: was launched in 2011 as a web-based open access mass spectral database for all kinds of high- and low-resolution mass spectra (e.g. EI-MS, QToF-MSMS, FTMS).

The NORMAN Digital Sample Freezing Platform (NORMAN DSFP) has been developed to host in a harmonised format liquid chromatography high resolution-mass spectrometry (LC-HR-MS) data, allowing for high-throughput processing, including retrospective analysis, of environmental samples for a wide range (thousands) of pollutants. Options for ‘big data’ processing/exchange at the European scale is being tested. Publication in prep.
