NORMAN workshop on Harmonising and extending knowledge of polymer-chemical interactions

The NORMAN Cross-Working Group Activity on Passive Sampling is organising an online workshop entitled “Harmonising and extending knowledge of polymer-chemical interactions to benefit both the passive sampling and plastic communities.”
Research communities working on plastics, passive sampling, food packaging, recycling and the environmental fate of polymers often address similar mechanisms but have largely developed their knowledge and approaches in parallel. This workshop will bring these communities together to share expertise, identify common challenges and explore opportunities for harmonising concepts, methods and practices related to polymer-chemical interactions.
The morning session will feature perspectives from five research areas:
- plastic-related chemicals;
- plastic recycling;
- food packaging;
- environmental fate of plastics and additives;
- passive sampling.
In the afternoon, participants will work interactively to map existing knowledge and critical gaps, prioritise topics for harmonisation and develop collaborative actions.
The workshop will also explore opportunities for preparing a critical review and joint research proposals addressing the identified knowledge needs.
The workshop builds on the outcomes of a preparatory session held during the International Passive Sampling Workshop and Symposium 2026 in Prague.
