5th World Water Forum - Bridging divides for water
The World Water Forum, organised every three years by the World Water Council in close collaboration with the authorities of the hosting country, is the largest international event in the field of water. It primarily serves four main purposes:

To raise the importance of water on the political agenda

To support the deepening of discussions towards the solution of international water issues in the 21st century

To formulate concrete proposals and bring their importance to the world's attention

To generate political commitment.

The successive editions of the World Water Forum have served as stepping-stones towards global collaboration on water problems. The Forum offers the water community and decision-makers from all over the world the unique opportunity to make recommendations for ensuring the security of water resources in the different parts of the world.
EFCA's second symposium - Ultrafine Particles: Sources, Effects, Risks, Mitigation Strategies
The first international EFCA symposium on Ultrafine Particles (UFP) was held in 2007. EFCA's main reason for this initiative was that it is still uncertain what the preferred metrics are for air quality aspects and the protection of human health against the effects of particulate matter.
The symposium made clear that this field comprises more than just the finest fraction of atmospheric Particulate Matter (PM). The rapid development of Nanotechnology and the many applications in a variety of fields also creates a potential risk, primarily in the domain of occupational health and consumer safety. Though a different policy field, the questions which are to be answered by scientists on exposure and health effects are similar and require the same methodologies.
SETAC Europe 2009 - Session on environmental specimen banking
The first environmental specimen banks were established over thirty years ago. Since then the number of Environmental Specimen banks is rising. However, few people know about ESB activities and their tremendous potential for environmental monitoring. Specimen banking is particularly valuable for providing research materials for retrospective study of environmental conditions, and for future verification of analytical results (quality assurance). With the increased interest in emerging chemicals of concern and the present emphasis on climate change, the value of such programmes for establishing timelines and historical patterns of environmental contaminants is being recognised and is resulting in the development of environmental specimen banking programmes world-wide.
This session aims to bring together researchers from established environmental specimen banking programmes in Europe, North America, and Asia to present and discuss the latest results regarding temporal changes in concentrations of emerging contaminants in their regions through use of banked specimens. In addition, we welcome presentations on the design of new specimen banking programmes. ESB sessions at SETAC and other scientific communities can establish a network of players in the banking arena and promote the ESB idea to science and environmental protection.

4th International Conference on Nanotechnology - Occupational and Environmental Health
The NanOEH2009 Conference is the fourth in a series of meetings arranged previously in Taiwan (2007), the United States (2005), and the United Kingdom (2004). The Conference will discuss global health and safety issues surrounding engineered nanoparticles and nanotechnologies, especially in connection with occupational and environmental health. The workplace represents a critical interface between people and nanotechnology, and an area where potential impact needs to be understood and managed. In the future, it is also likely that even wider distribution of these particles may have significant effects on organisms in different compartments of the environment. The potential effects of engineered nanoparticles on the ecosystem must thus also be considered in order to assure the safety of humans and the environment.
The conference will also provide insights into the latest research results and actions to assure the safety and thereby the future success of nanotechnologies.
Pan-European Monitoring Campaigns - Experiences and Perspectives
This workshop will present the experiences gained so far in the pan-European monitoring campaigns organised by JRC, FATE EUMORE (surface waters) and FATE-GROWS (groundwater) and the forthcoming campaigns, FATE-SEES on effluents and sewage sludge and FATE-COMES on compost and bio-wastes.
The aim of the workshop is to discuss in particular the shortcomings and the way how to develop this tool further for substance-specific applications including aspects of temporal and spatial representativeness. The workshop is indeed organized as discussion platform with a very limited number of key presentations.
Some of questions to be answered by the workshop are:

What are the experiences that could be learned from the pan-European monitoring exercises done so far?

What is the potential of a non-probabilistic pan-European monitoring approach for emerging pollutants?

Can pan-European monitoring campaigns be conducted in a regular way and can samples be time-capsuled, e.g. using specimen banks?

What are topics of ongoing and for future activities in this context?

Can pan-European monitoring datasets be used for modeling and can this evolve to an integrated assessment approach?

Can existing national monitoring resources be used more efficiently?

Analysis of Chloroparaffines - Quasimeme workshop
Chlorinated paraffins are currently of utmost importance to the environmental analyst. They are being produced in high volumes, they are under discussion in UNEP to be possibly defined as persistent organic pollutant, and they need to be analysed by European countries within the Water Framework Directive. However, the analysis is far from validation, as the paraffins are highly complex. The purpose of this workshop on the analysis of chlorinated paraffines (CPs) is to discuss the available methods and where possible to improve the quality of the analysis of these contaminants. Also, the need for interlaboratory studies and certified reference materials will be discussed.
This workshop will be held at the Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models (MUMM) in Ostend, Belgium. This workshop is organised by QUASIMEME, in collaboration with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the VU University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Workshop on From Hazard to Product Evaluation: How can we make chemical substitution work? A case study of flame retardants substitution
The main objective of the workshop is to bring together people that are working in the field of substitution of chemicals for better, safer alternatives, in particular for flame retardants. Due to their persistent nature and their toxicity some brominated flame retardants (BFRs), applied in a wide range of commercial products, need to be substituted by non-toxic substitutes. The workshop will focus on the substitution process chain starting with the prioritisation and selection of viable alternative flame retardants, to hazard characterisation, fire and product performance and finally to impact assessment. The workshop will also present and discuss findings obtained by the EC funded project ENFIRO.

7th international SedNet event: Sediments and Biodiversity: bridging the gap between science and policy
Sediment provides the basic conditions for a large range of biodiversity in our aquatic systems, from the headwaters of the river to the coastal zone. A healthy river needs sediment to support life. Sediment is an integral part of the ecosystem and directly affects biodiversity through hydromorphology, habitat formation and associated contamination. Using Water Framework Directive definitions, it can be said that sediment affects good ecological and chemical status of water bodies: impacts can be both positive and negative.
These impacts are particularly evident in shallow water bodies such as rivers, lagoons and coastal areas. Sediment management is therefore much more than dealing with sediment that needs to be dredged for navigation or construction; it is a way of working with nature, finding sustainable solutions for the evolution of water bodies in a highly dynamic environment.
The integration of sediment management into river basin management plans, thus supporting the achievement of European environmental policy objectives, is a perfect context to put this holistic approach into practice.
The Mediterranean Sea and its coastal areas present unique challenges for sediment management as compared with other EU ecoregions; this is coupled with the need for a whole-basin view, involving both the EU countries and the non-EU neighbours of the southern and eastern coastline.
The event is run in two parts: Special Sessions on 6-7 April and the main Conference on 7-8 April. In addition there is an excursion on 9 April to site works in the Venice lagoon.
