FORTHCOMING WORKSHOPS Top

The main objectives of the workshop are to discuss and evaluate whether the approaches currently in place are effective for the sampling and analysis of emerging contaminants, to develop a framework for identifying the next generation of emerging compounds and see what new contaminants are emerging.

For new emerging substances that you would like to present to the workshop, please e-mail a description of why the substance(s) is of interest to the audience and should be considered as a next generation emerging substance.

Further to recent screening studies in Scandinavia which have identified a widespread occurrence of some "new" BFRs in different environmental matrices, this event, organised by IVL in cooperation with UmU and NILU, will focus on: Identification of emission sources; Occurrence in the environment; Important environmental pathways; Potential ecotoxicology and human effects; The need for further development and validation of measurement methods.

The workshop will run on 23-24 November, followed by an Expert Group Meeting (participation limited to invited experts) starting at noon on 24 November and finishing the following day. The aim of the EG meeting will be to summarise the position of the experts on present knowledge and future research needs on the topic of new brominated flame retardants (publication of a Position Paper).

A possibility of using the NORMAN approach for prioritisation of emerging substances in the process of selection of future WFD priority substances will be discussed in detail.
Discussion will also tackle questions related to (i) the use of the data in support of European environmental policies and data collection activities carried out by the EEA, DG JRC, DG EUROSTAT and DG ENV and (ii) presentation of the data to the public.

Expert Group meetings are intended as 2–3 day highly-focused meetings with participation limited to invited leading experts in the field. The results and conclusions of each Expert Group meeting will lead to a Position Paper summarising the position of the NORMAN experts on the topic (dissemination via the web).

Two Expert Group meetings will be organised in 2009 as part of the Joint Programme of Activities.

NORMAN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RESEARCH TOPICS Top

As a result of the conclusions of the workshops organised during the course of the project and the other activities of the network, a was developed by the network with a list of recommendations for priority research areas to be included under the 7th Framework Programme of DG Research for 2010 and beyond.


THE NEXT WORKSHOP Top

The NORMAN network intends to continue these activities as a permanent, self-sustaining network with the organisation of workshops and expert group meetings on topics of priority interest. The programme of activities for 2009 is in preparation and the title of the next NORMAN workshop will be announced on this page as soon as the programme is approved.
