Environmental specimen banks (ESB) are important tools for the retrospective monitoring of emerging pollutants. The common feature of ESBs is a highly standardized sampling regime performed on a routine basis for a limited number of specimens. These samples are stored at very low temperatures. At any time the archived samples can be used to look back in time and generate time trends for hazardous contaminants, e.g. industrial chemicals, pesticides, biocides.
The main objective of the conference was to provide an overview on the individual ESB concepts in Europe. At present, environmental specimen banking is experiencing a renaissance. The number of ESBs is growing. The conference aimed at exploring the potential for closer networking of ESBs and cooperation with EU Chemical safety management.
The conference was organised by Umweltbundesamt, the German Ministry for Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety and the NORMAN Network. The meeting was open to all European ESBs, EU institutions of chemical safety management, EU Member State government bodies and other interested parties.
